fourth graders

As if the reminder from the Lord wasn't reassuring enough, I had a really encouraging morning with Mrs. Sorensen's class. They were so giggly and goofy today; everyone seemed to enjoy being at school for once. They took turns listing adjectives and when one girl spoke she said, "Beautiful; Miss Wilhelm is very beautiful." I melted right there. I've been praying for this class like crazy and today I got to see their joy, it was incredible.
Then I was sent off to sharpen pencils, 360 to be exact. Well, after pencil 216, I ran out of room in the bin, so I gladly made my way back to the classroom with lead all over my hands. (How the heck did it get all over me, am I five?) I watched Mrs. Sorensen hand out the Fast Math Facts, which is really just a panic attack waiting to happen, and none too subtly watched three kids racing to finish the 100 problems first. It was hillarious! I heard one little boy (who is extremely little and ridiculously smart) whisper, "Well, I don't care, because I still finished first, ha ha!" It brought back memories of feeling like my hand would fall off because I was writing so quickly, while simultaneously feeling like I could throw up out of anxiety at finishing on time. I love this.
Last but not least, before I headed out, Mrs. Sorensen handed me a big pink handmade construction paper pouch that had hand-cut red, purple and white hearts on it. My name was on the top, and inside were Valentine cards and candies from all the students. It was so sweet. I melted all over again. I absolutely love this. I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to sharpen 216 pencils, to help out a teacher, to love on kids who stare at me for some reason, to pray for 20 fourth graders who live in the ghetto and need Jesus' love more than I know. I love this, I love them. What a huge priveledge. Thank you Lord.
